Polar Bear in the Jungle

I bought this beautiful yarn this past spring. I had to. I am a Lost fan and it is Dharma yarn from Sheepy Time Knits and it is called Polar Bear in the Jungle...trust me. Say what you will about Lost and how it ended, it was six years of my life and I will always love it.But I have a had a series of false starts with this yarn in my attempts to find the best sock pattern. First I tried a toe-up sock. Cath and I had grand plans to finally break our cuff down commitment and attempt some toe-up. It was an abject disaster. We both made it past the toe. That's where Cath stopped. I made it to the heel flap and that was it for me. It could have been the pattern...but it will be a little while before I try that experiment again. So then I cast on a few different attempts - a mint leaf pattern, a standard stockinette, something with yarn overs - and frogged every one. It was like a little toe-up induced purgatory. It was something about the pattern, something about the shape, but mostly it was the tricky colorway. The white kept clustering in one area rather than striping. As you can see, I have too much polar bear in this area when I really need polar bear all over the jungle. I needed a pattern that was the equivalent of a tasty fish biscuit. If you were a Lost fan you would be so with me right now! So I went back to my Ravelry queue to give it another try.
We have a winner! This is Hourglass by Bev Elicerio from Knitty Fall 2008. And here is the thing - it has 70 stitches rather than the 60-65 I am used to working with in sock patterns. Apparently that extra ten stitches was just the ticket because the yarn is giving me an awesome stripe! The pattern is strong too so it isn't lost in all that foliage or chomped up by all that polar bear. I am loving this sock pattern and yarn combination.Mmmmmm, fish biscuit!
